Building a social enterprise from scratch

The Business Times column profiles business families featured in SMU Business Families Institute’s commemorative book – The 4Gs of Business Families – and how they approach issues of governance and stewardship. They support BFI’s mission, which believes an important aspect of a business family's legacy is to be a champion of change and making a positive impact to their communities as they build their businesses. SMU established BFI in 2012 in response to the growing needs of business families in Asia. This article features the story of how Ms Lam Shumei, daughter of the late successful entrepreneur and businessman Larry Lam, built a chicken farm in 2014, which has now become the largest poultry meat supplier in Rwanda.
