Fintech - New Finance: New Skills and New Opportunities

We are pleased to announce that SMU will be signing an MOU with Sunday Finance HK Limited to launch a Fintech Head-Start Program on Friday, 15 Sep 2017. The Program will provide SMU students with practical and applicable skills in new finance as well as overseas exposure as they partner students from Taiwan National Chengchi University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in real life projects.

In conjunction with the MOU Signing Ceremony, we are delighted to be holding a panel discussion on Fintech - New Finance: New Skills and New Opportunities with the following esteemed panellists – Ms Maggie Ng, Founder and CEO, FinEX Asia, Mr Soul Htite, Founder and CEO, Dianrong.com, Ms Angie Lin, Executive Director, Co-CEO, Head of Investment Solutions, AMTD Group, Professor Ming-Hua Hsieh, Vice Chairman, Fintech Research Center, NCCU, and Mr Varun Mittal, ASEAN Fintech Lead, EY, to share the various perspectives and insights on the topic.

Professor Annie Koh

A Practice Professor of Finance, Professor Annie Koh also holds the position of Academic Director for two university level institutes - the Business Families Institute and International Trading Institute.
 
A notable conference speaker, panel moderator and commentator, Annie serves on a number of councils, advisory boards, steering committees, corporate and fintech firms.

A Fulbright scholar, Annie earned her PhD in International Finance from Stern School of Business, New York University in 1988. 
 
Her research interests are in Family Office and Family Business, Investor Behaviour, Alternate Investments and Enterprise Risk Management. Annie is a recipient of the prestigious Singapore Public Administration Medal, Bronze in 2010 and Silver in 2016, for her contributions to the education and public sectors. 
 
Mr Sopnendu Mohanty

Mr Sopnendu Mohanty is responsible for creating development strategies and regulatory policies around technology innovation to “better manage risks, enhance efficiency and strengthen competitiveness in the financial sector”. Prior to joining MAS, Mohanty was with Citibank as their Global Head of the Consumer Lab Network and Programs, which included driving innovation programs and managing innovation labs across multiple geographies globally. 
 
Mohanty has spent 20 years in the APAC region and held various roles in technology, finance, productivity, and business development. Globally, he played a significant subject matter expert role in driving Citibank’s global smart banking program, to transform bank’s physical network to digital first, smart & innovative, client centric and highly delightful customer engagement center.
 
Mohanty has co-authored various patented work in area of retail distribution of financial sector. He was in the list of Fintech’s Most Powerful Dealmakers of 2016 by Institutional Investor.

Professor Tsaih received the B.Eng. degree in the Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Science from Institute of National Tsing Hua University, Taipei, Taiwan in 1983. Subsequently he received the M.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering from University of California, Berkeley, USA, in 1988. He received the PhD degree in Industrial Engineering and Operation Research from University of California, Berkeley, in 1991. 
 
Prof Tsaih’s major fields of study are Artificial Neural Networks and Service Science Management Engineering. He has been teaching and researching at National Chengchi University since 1991. He has published more than 60 papers and six edited books with several awards in teaching and academic research.
 
Maggie Ng

Maggie Ng has more than 20 years of experience in financial services and consumer finance. In 2017, she co-founded FinEX Asia, the first global fintech marketplace connecting institutional and retail investors in Asia with high quality, low volatility and untapped asset classes, particularly U.S. consumer lending. 
 
Prior to founding FinEx Asia, Maggie most recently served as the Head of Asia and EMEA Lending at Citibank N.A. Under her leadership, these regional lending portfolios accounted for more than 50% of Citibank’s global consumer lending business. She also delivered double-digit growth in outstanding loans and increased online asset generation and revenue growth six-fold. 
 
Previously, Maggie headed Citibank Hong Kong’s credit cards and unsecured lending businesses. Under her leadership, credit cards growth consistently outperformed the market five years running. Also, credit card receivables were among the highest in the market and the lending business consistently ranked number one in the market. Maggie served on the Board of Directors for Citibank HK and chaired the company’s local diversity committee promoting equal rights for women and minorities. Prior to Citibank, Maggie held senior positions at Ernst & Young (Australia) and Broken Hill Proprietary (HK) Ltd.
 
Soul Htite

Soul Htite is the Founder and CEO of Dianrong.com (previously known as SinoLending). Dianrong.com is an online lending platform based in Shanghai China where members can borrow and lend money among themselves at better interest rates. Borrowers can get loans significantly below market rates, and lenders can earn returns well above those of bank deposits, wealth management products, trust products and other traditional fixed-income investments. 
 
Prior to Dianrong.com, Soul co-founded Lending Club, the world's largest and most advanced Peer-2-Peer (P2P) company, where he served as the Head of Technology until 2011. He led all the design and development efforts of Lending Club's online platform, ensuring that all online capabilities were both state-of-the-art and fully secure. The P2P platform received the prestigious Technology Pioneer award at the 2011 World Economic Forum. 
 
Soul has spent most of his professional career building enterprise software at Oracle Corporation. His focus was in real-time online services and system design for high availability and fault tolerance. Soul held a senior product development position in Oracle's core Server Tech team, and led various research projects focusing on large scale online services.
 
Angie Lin

Angie Lin is the Executive Director, Co-Chief Executive Officer and Head of Investment Solutions, who is primarily responsible for overall management, strategic planning, business development and overseeing the investment solutions business of our Group. Angie joined AMTD Group in February 2012 and is the Head of Asset Management, where she set up the securities and wealth management business. She has served as the Head of Investment Solutions since February 5, 2016 when the Group commenced its investment solutions business.

Angie has over 10 years of experience in the financial products trading and investment advisory. From March 2009 to January 2012, she worked at Polaris Securities (Hong Kong) Limited, a leading Taiwan-funded brokerage firm in Hong Kong, where she was primarily responsible for fixed income financial products trading and lastly served as an associate director of financial product department. From February 2006 to August 2007, she was an investment analyst at ISM Media, a firm principally engaged in legal and direct investments in London, where she focused on offshore investments and handled tax-related and legal matters. Angie holds Responsible Officer of Type 1 (Dealing in Securities) and Type 9 (Asset Management) licenses under the SFC. She obtained her first Master’s degree in Finance from the University of Glasgow in Scotland in December 2003 and second Master’s degree in Legal Studies from the University of Nightingale in September 2006 (through long distance learning course).
 

Professor Ming-Hua Hsieh

Ming-hua Hsieh is the Vice Chairman of the Fintech Research Center at National Chengchi University, Taiwan. He also is an independent director of Transglobe life insurance in Taiwan. He has given lectures in business schools of National Chengchi University, National Taiwan university and Sun-Yat Sun University. He led a few research projects related to the regulation of financial institutions. He received his Ph. D. in Operations Research from Stanford University. From 1997 to 1999, he was a software designer at Hewlett Packard Company, California. His interests include blockchain, Monte Carlo simulation and risk management. 
 
Varun Mittal
ASEAN Fintech Lead

Varun Mittal is the ASEAN Fintech Lead at EY covering emerging technology and business models in financial services across ASEAN. Previously Varun was the first marketing and sales employee at helloPay (acquired by ANT Financial, Alibaba Group), led payments for Samsung in ASEAN and developed regional mobile payment solutions at Singtel Group. 
 
Prior his work in payments, Mittal worked at Microsoft and Gemalto. He holds an MBA from the National University of Singapore. Varun is also part of founding team of Singapore Fintech Association, working closely with startups, educational institutions, investors and regulators across ASEAN.
